Description

This phenotype results the Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP) documented before surgery, prioritizing documented MAP values over calculated. If there no blood pressure values found in the pre-anesthesia evaluation or H&P, will default to the MAP (documented or calculated) documented in the time period immediately before surgery.

Limitation

Only considers values documented within 4 hours before Anesthesia Start through Patient In Room time.

Dependent on non-missing and valid baseline systolic and diastolic values. There is a small chance that, due to the retrospective nature of the data, not all artifacts were removed.

Data quality is limited to individual site documentation accuracy, completeness, and variable mapping, which is performed by each site, independently. MPOG, as the coordinating center, reviews data quality at each data upload and monthly via Data Diagnostics and Case Validation tools. This review, while thorough, may not contain all data elements relevant to this phenotype and thus should be carefully reviewed by the user.

This phenotype uses the Blood Pressure Observations phenotype to determine artifact values.

First, assess values mapped to one of the following preop concepts (typically found in the anesthesia preoperative evaluation or H&P):

Concepts:

71120 Physical Exam - BP Sys/Dias Combined
70211 Physical Exam - BP Dias
70212 Physical Exam - BP Sys

Calculate mean arterial pressure (MAP) using this equation: (BaselineBloodPressureSystolic)*1/3 + (BaselineBloodPressureDiastolic)*2/3

Value determined to be valid if >10 but < 150

If no values found to be mapped to the above H&P concepts, phenotype will use the earliest documented blood pressure values mapped to one of the following concepts & documented within 4 hours before Anesthesia Start time through Patient in Room time. If patient in room is not available, will default to anesthesia start time. Values documented at the same time as patient in room will not be included.
