Description

This phenotype determines whether a case was a Endoscopy related procedure or Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) using logic based upon a combination of Surgical CPT codes and procedure text.

Limitation

Cases where the endoscopy was performed though a PEG will not be included in this phenotype.

May include cases that had a procedure done of a similar tier such as having a bronchoscopy.

May include cancelled cases.

Relies on accurate procedure text documentation and surgical CPT codes.

Data quality is limited to individual site documentation accuracy, completeness, and variable mapping, which is performed by each site, independently. MPOG, as the coordinating center, reviews data quality at each data upload and monthly via Data Diagnostics and Case Validation tools. This review, while thorough, may not contain all data elements relevant to this phenotype and thus should be carefully reviewed by the user.

Step 1. Was case classified as valid case using the Is Case Valid phenotype. If No, mark No. If Yes, proceed to step 2.

Step 2. Was the case classified as a Intubation Only using the Procedure Type: Intubation Only phenotype. If Yes, mark No. If No, proceed to step 3.

Step 3. Check the case for at least one of the Surgical CPT codes listed below. If one of the Surgical CPT codes are present, proceed to step 5. If no proceed to step 4.

Step 4. Check the case for the following procedure text? If the text is not present, mark no. If the text is present, proceed to step 5.

Text that contains 'GI' or colon and the text 'exam'
Text that begins with the text on the list below and ends in -scopy.

Step 5. Check the case for indicators that the endoscopy/ERCP were associated with another procedure using the procedure text below. If the below procedure text is present, proceed to step 7. If No, proceed to step 6.

Step 6. Check the procedure text for indications that an ERCP was performed using the below procedure text. If the below text is present, return "ERCP Without Another Procedure." If no, return "Endoscopy Without Another Procedure."

Step 7. Check the procedure text for indications that an ERCP was performed using the procedure text below. If the below text is present, return "ERCP Plus Another Procedure." If no proceed to step 8.

Step 8. Check for the procedure text "colon." If present perform the below check. If not, return "Endoscopy Plus Another Procedure."

If the text colon AND the text "diagnostic" or "EGD" or "flex sig" or "-scopy" is present return "Endoscopy Plus Another Procedure." If the additional text is not available return "No."
