Description

This phenotype identifies cases where the patient underwent organ procurement surgery for transplant purposes from a deceased donor (heart, lung, liver, kidney, pancreas, intestine).
Excludes:

Living donor nephrectomy or other living donor procedures.
Tissue graft procurement (skin, fat, cartilage, tendon, buccal mucosa, free flap).
Tumor procurement for TILs or research.
Transplant recipient surgeries (orthotopic transplant).

Limitation

May include cancelled cases.
Relies on accurate CPT coding, ASA status, ICD codes, and procedure text.
Includes only deceased donor organ procurement.
Excludes all tissue graft and specimen procurement cases.

Data quality is limited to individual site documentation accuracy, completeness, and variable mapping, which is performed by each site, independently. MPOG, as the coordinating center, reviews data quality at each data upload and monthly via Data Diagnostics and Case Validation tools. This review, while thorough, may not contain all data elements relevant to this phenotype and thus should be carefully reviewed by the user.

A case is classified as Organ Procurement = Yes (Deceased Donor) if at least 2 of the following apply:

Deceased Donor Indicators

1. ASA Physical Status = 6 (brain-dead organ donor)

2. ICD code G93.82 (brain death) documented same day or within 60 hours of anesthesia start

3. Date of Death occurs before or during the procedure.

- Surgical CPTs: 32850 (lung), 33930 (heart), 33940 (heart-lung), 44132 (intestine), 47133 (liver), 48550 (pancreas), 50300 (kidney)

Living donor terms Includes keywords: procur, recover, organ, donation, donar, heart, liver, lung, kidney, or abdomen.
- Note: heart, liver, lung, kidney, or abdomen must have an ASA of 6
Excludes:
- Living donor terms: living, live donor, donor nephrectomy.
- Tissue graft terms: graft, cartilage, fat, skin, tendon, specimen, free flap, rectus, latissimus, buccal, vessel, bone, vein.
- Tumor procurement terms: tumor, TIL, metastasectomy, lymphadenectomy, carniectomy,laparotomy.
- Location terms: eye, head, neck, shoulder.
- Transplant recipient terms: transplant, orthotopic.
- Exploratory or unrelated: explor, oscopy.
