Description

This phenotype returns the number of attempts to successfully intubate the patient for each case based on collation mapping of raw text and numeric values documented within the electronic medical record. These data include AIMS variables mapped to 'Airway Attempt Notes'. Collation mapping is completed at the MPOG Coordinating Center.

Limitation

Limited to mapping ability to select appropriate category from written notes

Data quality is limited to individual site documentation accuracy, completeness, and variable mapping, which is performed by each site, independently. MPOG, as the coordinating center, reviews data quality at each data upload and monthly via Data Diagnostics and Case Validation tools. This review, while thorough, may not contain all data elements relevant to this phenotype and thus should be carefully reviewed by the user.

This phenotype considers all notes and note details mapped to the following subset of MPOG concepts if documented between Anesthesia Start and Anesthesia End:

One value is returned per case and is based on collation mapping completed at the coordinating center.

Step 1: Check Anesthesia Technique: General. If case returns ETT, LMA or 'Both ETT and LMA', then proceed. If not, result No Attempts and stop.

Step 2: Check returned values from Airway Attempt Notes. If value is associated with a note detail, check if the parent note is an Airway concept? If yes, proceed. If no, return -999 and stop.
