Description

This phenotype determines whether a case had a Bronchoscopy procedure using logic based upon a combination of Anesthesia CPT codes and procedure text.

Limitation

May include cases that had a procedure done of a similar tier such as having a endoscopy.

May include cancelled cases.

Relies on accurate procedure text documentation and surgical CPT codes.

Data quality is limited to individual site documentation accuracy, completeness, and variable mapping, which is performed by each site, independently. MPOG, as the coordinating center, reviews data quality at each data upload and monthly via Data Diagnostics and Case Validation tools. This review, while thorough, may not contain all data elements relevant to this phenotype and thus should be carefully reviewed by the user.

Step 1. Was case classified as valid case using the Is Case Valid phenotype. If No, mark No. If Yes, proceed to step 2.

Step 2. Was case classified as an Intubation Only case using the Procedure Type: Intubation Only phenotype. If Yes, mark No. If No, proceed to step 3.

Step 3. Does the case flag >0 for Obstetric Anesthesia Type or Procedure Type: Organ Procurement If yes, mark No. If No, proceed to step 4.

Step 4. Check if the case matches any of the surgical CPT codes below. If yes, proceed to step 6. If no procedure to step 5.

Step 6. Does the case have only the following specific text? If yes mark "Bronch Without Another Procedure", If no, proceed to step 7.

Step 7. Does the predicted Anesthesia CPT rank 1 OR Primay = 00520, 00522, 00524, 00528 or 00529 AND Procedure Service = Medical Pulmonology? If so, proceed to step 11. If no, proceed to step 8.

Step 8. Does the primary Anesthesia CPT match CPT = 00520, 00522, 00524, 00528 or 00529 then proceed to step 11. If no proceed to step 9.

Step 9. Does the predicted Anesthesia CPT = 00520, 00522, 00524, 00528 or 00529? If so, proceed to step 12. If the predicted is rank 2 or 3 and has the procedrue text "bronch" then also proceed to step 12. If no, proceed to step 10.

Step 10. Does the case contain CPT codes other the ones listed below? If Yes, mark "Yes, Bronch plus another procedure." If no, proceed to step 11.
